Benitses – South Corfu

Facing the Greek mainland, Benitses is backed by steep hills covered in forest. Once a simple fishing village, it is now home to a state-of-the-art marina which is a port of call for both working fishing boats and expensive yachts.  With a long history dating back to the 15th century, Benitses is a very famous and highly popular resort, which used to be a fishing village. It is located in the center of the island, just 12 kilometers away from the city of Corfu.

Though it is decades now since it became a tourist magnet, it has not lost its traditional character and stunning natural beauty. In Benitses, one can admire a landscape that perfectly combines the aquamarine Ionian waters and the lush mountainous vegetation of Corfu. Swimming in these waters and walking on the smooth fine pebbles is an unforgettably pleasing experience.

The locals are genuinely hospitable and you will find some very good restaurants with great fish, for which Benitses is famous.

What’s more, the Achilleion Palace, a famous place of great elegance and beauty as well as historical and artistic significance, is not a long way from Benitses.

Getting to the town from Benitses is convenient, thanks to the trusty No. 6 blue bus that whisks visitors away in no time.

Itinerary

Tsaki

It’s really a piece of paradise even if the road is very near. Mostly sandy, very small and not wide, without tourist facilities.
A wonderful sea with clean and calm waters and the Mediterranean vegetation that arrives into the sea.

Agios Ioannis Peristeron (Blue Flag Beach 2023)

Located almost midway between Benitses and Moraitika, this lovely beach, surrounded by lush green vegetation, is almost 2.5 kilometres long and has a combination of sand and small pebbles. It also has some small coves for those looking for privacy and solitude. The water, which is the most amazing shade of aquamarine, is crystal clear but quite deep in parts. Although suitable for families it is not a beach for small children. There are several traditional tavernas which are right on the beach – specialising in seafood and traditional Greek and Corfiot cuisine.

Moraitika

It’s a popular beach because Moraitika is the biggest village in this part of Corfù coastline.
There are tourist facilities and it’s a perfect place if you have children.

Moraitika falls into two sections. The main part of the resort is spread out between the main road and the sea, with its long beach of shingle and sand which offers many types of water sports. Slightly inland, is the old village of Moraitika, picturesquely set on a low hill. Between them, the main road is bordered with a profusion of shops, tavernas, bars and restaurants.

Messonghi

The beach of this tourist village is particular only for the environment in which it is.
On the left side there’s a small river that runs into the sea, while on the right side there’s a hill covered by olive trees.

Messonghi started life as a fishing village at the outlet of one of the island’s major rivers. It is now a busy resort which extends between the original settlement and the main road, well inland. The beach is narrow but long, running in a sweep to a headland to the south, and is formed of coarse sand and shingly pebbles. Water sports abound, and children will find some safe shallow spots for swimming. Inland, a ridge of hills forms the eastern boundary of the Messonghi River valley with its endless olive groves and sun-scorched heathland.

Boukari

Approached from either the tourist resort of Messonghi or the fishing port of Petriti, Boukari is situated on one of the prettiest roads in Corfu, which runs along the island’s eastern shoreline for much of the way, with the mountains of mainland Greece on the other side of the water. It is a quiet spot with a tiny pebble beach and a couple of wooden jetties where fishing boats unload their catch. There are several excellent fish tavernas, with tables just a metre from the water’s edge – you will be invited into the kitchen to choose from a selection of fresh fish, lobster, octopus and other delicacies, which will then be grilled over wood.

Petritis

Petritis is a scenic fishing village near Lefkimmi, in the southern part of Corfu. Petritis beach, right next to the village, is a fine shallow sandy beach with clear waters. This makes it perfect for families with small children.

The overall mood of Petritis is one of serenity and relaxation. It’s a peaceful and beautiful place where one can unwind and enjoy the tranquility.

Moreover, due to its being a fishing village, Petritis is well known for the excellent fish dishes offered by its lovely tavernas.

All in all, this is an ideal place for those who want to leave all worries behind and truly enjoy the sun and the sea!

Notos

Bordering with Petritis to the north, Notos is a small village on the southeast coast of Corfu, located about 34 km away from the capital. Notos is full of flowers and trees and rewards its guests with panoramic views of captivating landscapes. It is a place of unspoilt natural beauty and part of one of the most pristine areas of the island.

It has a lovely, quiet, very welcoming beach, while visitors can also opt to explore its small bays as well as try both its sandy and pebbly shores.

In addition, there are some quite decent restaurants with great food and attractive prices!

Molos

Molos is a locals’ beach, in use mainly by residents of the nearby town of Lefkimmi, and except at weekends and during high summer holidays it tends to be very quiet. It is reached by a quiet road which runs alongside the Lefkimmi river and past a small, colourful harbour. Stretching along the coast from the river outlet, the beach is very wide and sandy and backed by bamboo and reeds. The only facility is a single beach bar serving drinks and snacks; the nearest tavernas are at Lefkimmi’s river bridge. The water is extremely shallow for a long way out, making it safe for children.

Alikes (Lefkimmi)

Alikes (which translates to saltpans) is a peaceful and attractive area located in the south of Corfu, about 45 km from the capital. In Alikes, as the name indicates, salt production used to take place. The saltpans were in operation from the late Middle Ages up to the late 20th century.

Because of the salt extraction, access to the beautiful sandy seashore was fairly restricted but these days visitors can enjoy the golden beach and its crystal-clear waters. The beach stretches for nearly 0,5 km and there is a spot where one can find umbrellas and loungers.

Alikes is an ideal place for a walk as the saltpans have now given way to wetlands. The vegetation is varied and interesting, there are many different types of birds to watch and the whole area constitutes a charming unspoilt part of Corfu.
